Roy Bourgeois was born in Lutcher, Louisiana in 1938. He graduated from the University of Louisiana with a degree in Geology, then spent four years in the US Navy, serving in Vietnam.
After the military, Bourgeois entered the Maryknoll Order and was ordained a Catholic priest. He was in foreign ministry working with social justice and poverty issues, with the Maryknoll order, for 40 years and received the Pax Christi USA Teacher of Peace Award in 1997. Bourgeois is known for founding, in 1990, the School of Americas Watch in Georgia, a human rights organization with the intent to close the training of military officers in Latin America.
