Widely renowned, Mahatma Gandhi served as a prominent Indian nationalist and politician. A staunch advocate for Indian independence, Gandhi believed in nonviolence and peace. He often sympathized with many different religions and bridged these diverse beliefs to better his own understanding. Among his many achievements — a twenty-one day fast in protest against war between Muslims and Hindus, initiation of a constructive program for social reform and disbandment of stringent salt laws — Gandhi served as a life-long supporter of independence and peace.
