Lancaster Interchurch Peace Witness was one of four organizations nominated for the Torch of Global Enlightenment Award on May 15, 2015 at Penn State Hershey School of Medicine. The award was given at a recognition dinning attended by 75 guests “in recognition of promoting the highest social values, tolerance, respect for diversity, and global understanding. LIPW was also a nominee in 2014.
World Affairs Council and Penn State College of Medicine collaborate in this annual event. Together they seek to “honor people and organizations in our community that exhibit the ideals of respect of diverse cultures, peoples and lands.”
Urbane Peachey represented the LIPW Board at the awards dinner. In receiving the award, he explained to this diverse gathering that “we intend to be advocates for equal and just public policies and actions that further socioeconomic security and the common good.”
Other nominees were Survivors Inc. for its work on human trafficking and violence against women and Physicians for Social Responsibility. The winner of the Award was Peace Islands Institute, Philadelphia, nominated for its advocacy of international peace and understanding and interfaith initiatives. Five individuals were also nominated for the award.
World Affairs Council of Harrisburg is a non-profit and non partisan agency dedicated to international education and engagement on global issues in Central Pennsylvania. There are special programs for young people designed to nurture appreciation for world cultures, faiths and ideologies.
