LIPW is eager to join CeaseFirePa (Pennsylvania) Everytown For Gun Safety (national), and Mayors Against Illegal Guns, as in the past, in advocacy for reasonable gun legislation.
This week will be book-ended by the Orlando shooting June13,— the worst mass shooting in American history — and the anniversary of the Charleston shooting. Both serve as symbols of the carnage that comes when guns are so easily obtained by those who should not have them. Moments of silence, prayer and vigils are important, but we need more. We need action by those in power.
Congress has the power to enact stronger laws to keep guns out of the hands of those who should not have them. It’s time to demand that our elected officials:
Strengthen the background check system to cover more private sales and close loopholes that enable people to avoid background checks.
Keep guns out of the hands of those suspected of or being investigated for links to terrorist groups or for terrorist activity.
Keep powerful semi-automatic firearms and detachable box magazine automatic assault weapons out of the hands of those convicted of hate crimes.
There is no doubt such measures will keep us safer. Failure to act is unacceptable. Please ask members of Congress to cosponsor and support these critical pieces of legislation. Reasonable Gun Legislation in Pennsylvania
CeaseFirePA is a statewide coalition of mayors, police chiefs, faith leaders, community organizations, and individual Pennsylvanians working together to take a stand against gun violence. Through outreach, education, coalition building, and advocacy, we work to reduce gun violence in our communities, stop the flow of illegal guns onto our streets, and keep guns out of the hands of people who should not have them.
